Course Description
When a ship suffers a casualty or is in a position of peril or facing an emergency, the Master and/or the Officers concerned must be in a position to decide what is the best course of action. During an emergency, there may be little time to make decisions and the officer has to have a good presence of mind to take these decisions. He also will have the company’s contingency plans to his disposal, which will help him take the decisions.
During navigation various types of emergencies could occur, namely steering failure, engine failure, failure of navigational aids, failure of radar, blackout, groundings, collisions etc. This course conducted on a Full Mission Simulator depicting real life-like situation, is an effective learning tool for officers to gain confidence in handling emergency situations and their ability to take decisions under stressful situations.

Course Objective
Be able to:
- Handle a navigational emergency during his watch.
- Assist the Master in managing a situation of a navigational emergency.
- Take immediate post accident actions, in case of a casualty.
- Have a clear understanding of the type of communication to be carried out.
- Have knowledge of Engine room emergencies, which may affect
- avigation.
- Make a plan of action to combat the emergencies and/or casualties.
- Carry out Search and Rescue for vessel / persons in distress at sea.
Various qualities of the ship’s officer is assessed during the exercise:
- Handling a disabled or partially disabled ship.
- Leadership - command and control.
- Analysis of the situation and logical reasoning of action to be taken.
- Anchoring in an emergency.
- Delegation and management of resources available
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Countering threat of pollution
- Damage control.

- Bridge manoeuvring console - Engine Parameters.
- Human factors and leadership in emergencies.
