Ice Navigation Simulator Course

Entry Criteria:     All Deck Officers (should have done Ship Handling Simulator/Bridge Team Management Course)

Course Description

"Know your Ice before you go through it". In other words, before attempting any passage through ice it is vitally important that Ice is identified as to Type, Thickness, Hardness, Floe Size and concentration.

  • To enable the navigator to interpret ice and meteorological data and formulate a situation appraisal and risk analysis for passage planning.
  • To enable the navigator to determine the specialized maneuvering strategies necessary for ice transit.
  • To help the navigator to appreciate and make best use of icebreaker assistance and convoy operations.
  • To help the navigator to recognize, evaluate, and control damage and consequential pollution.
  • To help the navigator to prepare the vessel prior to entry into ice infested waters.
  • To help the navigator to understand the precaution, symtoms of first aid needed againts hypothec & frost bite.

  • Types of Ice, their formation and properties.
  • Ice observations - methods used.
  • Ice Reports and Ice Charts (Egg Code).
  • Passage Planning – considerations for ice.
  • Ice Seamanship.
  • Cold related injuries & cold weather precautions.
  • Exercises – interpretation of facsimile charts and passage planning.
  • Canadian Artic and Baltic Ice Regulations (including Vessel Ice Class).
  • Navigation / Ship Handling in Ice.
  • Communications and Messaging.
  • Berthing / Entering Locks in Ice.
